On October 15, 2009, Abdi A. Abdi, Executive Director of SBATA, was recognized as one of Tucson's Top 40 Under 40. These awards, held on an annual basis, recognize local, young leaders of the Tucson community. Abdi was recognized for his leadership of the Somali Bantu community, refugee community, and local community, as well as for the advancement and progress of SBATA.

In August 2009, Mursal Abukar Ali will become the first Somali Bantu refugee in Tucson to attend the University of Arizona. He plans to study International Studies and continue his study of the Arabic language. He plans to be a positive role model and encourage more people to further their education.

Abdi A. Abdi became the first Somali Bantu refugee living in Tucson to become an American citizen! He was joined by 59 other people from 21 different countries on January 9th, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. at the Federal Courthouse in Downtown Tucson.
